Isabella Marie “Bella” Swan (later Bella Cullen) is the fictional protagonist of the Twilight series, written by Stephenie Meyer. The Twilight series, consisting of the novels Twilight,New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn, is primarily narrated from Bella’s point-of-view.

In Twilight, Bella moves to her father’s home in Forks, Washington, meets the mysterious Cullen family, and falls in love with Edward Cullen. However, she soon discovers that the family is a coven of vampires. Bella expresses a desire to become a vampire herself, against Edward’s wishes. In the second novel, New Moon, Edward and the other Cullens leave Forks in an effort to keep Bella safe from the vampire world. Jacob Black, a member of the Quileute tribe who is also a shape shifter taking a wolf form, comforts the distraught and severely depressed Bella. She comes to care deeply for Jacob, though less than she loves Edward. In Eclipse, Bella becomes engaged to Edward, and they marry in Breaking Dawn. Edward then transforms Bella into a vampire after she nearly dies giving birth to their daughter, Renesmee.

Kristen Stewart plays Bella in the Twilight film series.

Edward Cullen

BioMain article: Edward Cullen

Edward Cullen (born Edward Anthony Masen) is a major character, implicated in all of the Twilight Saga films and books. As stated in the first and second novels, he was born on June 20, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois, and was frozen in his 17-year-old body while dying of the Spanish influenza, when he was changed into a vampire by Dr. Carlisle Cullen. As shown inTwilight, he only did so because Edward’s dying mother, Elizabeth, begged him to save Edward. A member of the Olympic Coven, Edward only drinks animal blood and has the special ability to read minds. He falls in love with Bella soon after she arrives in Forks. Edward knows that he could kill Bella easily, a fact that torments him so much that, in the book New Moon, he decided to leave Forks with his family so they wouldn’t be able to hurt her. He returned because he realized he cannot live without her. Edward marries Bella in Breaking Dawnand they have a daughter, Renesmee.

Robert Pattinson plays Edward in the Twilight film series.

Jacob Black

BioMain article: Jacob Black

Jacob Black is Bella’s best friend. He is a Quileute Native American and a werewolf. In Twilight, Jacob plays the minor role of a forgotten childhood friend of Bella’s, and he develops a crush on her. In an attempt to learn more about Cullens, Bella flirts with Jacob, and he tells her tribe legends about “the cold ones”, or vampires. After Edward leaves Bella in New Moon, she spends much of her time with Jacob. Though she only considers him a friend, Jacob falls in love with Bella. Although he spends most of his time in Eclipse trying to win Bella, inBreaking Dawn he imprints— an involuntary process in which a werewolf finds their soul mate— on Bella and Edward’s daughter, Renesmee.

Taylor Lautner plays Jacob Black in the Twilight film series.

Carlisle Cullen

BioCarlisle Cullen (also known as Stregone Benefico is Esme Cullen’s husband and the adoptive father of Edward, Emmett and Alice Cullen, as well as Rosalie and Jasper Hale. His first appearance was in Twilight and his physical age is 23. Carlisle is described to look like a model; he has blond hair, and is slender but muscular. Carlisle theorizes that when a human is turned into a vampire, they will have an enhanced ability from their previous life. He believes he brought compassion from his human life. Carlisle has had centuries to perfect his medicinal talents, therefore making him an excellent doctor.

Unlike most vampires, he is not at all tempted by the scent of human blood, due to the over 300 years he has spent holding back his temptations. Carlisle Cullen was the son of an Anglican pastor, born in 1640s London, England, during a time of religious upheaval. His father and other pastors hunted creatures such as witches, werewolves, and vampires, often mistaking humans for them. As his father grew older, Carlisle assumed his role.

One night, he was attacked by a vampire and left to die on the streets. Knowing he would be rejected by society, he hid himself and silently endured the painful transformation, emerging as a vampire. Horrified by what he had become, he tried killing himself many different ways, but all failed due to his power. One night, unable to endure hunger any longer, he fed on some passing deer. Subsequently realizing he could avoid feeding on humans, he committed himself to resisting his blood lust and to becoming a doctor.

For a short time, Carlisle lived with the Volturi, though he eventually left and traveled to the New World. While treating patients with the Spanish Influenza, he met an ill woman who begged him to save her dying son, Edward. Out of loneliness, Carlisle transformed Edward into a vampire, and Edward became his companion. Soon after, in 1921, Carlisle moved toAshland, Wisconsin where he treated Esme after her failed suicide attempt brought on by her infant son’s death. Carlisle felt compelled to save her and transformed her into a vampire, subsequently falling in love with her, and later marrying her. Carlisle then transformed Rosalie Hale, a young woman nearly killed by her drunken fiancé and his friends in Rochester, New York, and left in the street to die. Later, while hunting, Rosalie found a young man named Emmett who had been mauled by a bear, and carried him over 100 miles to Carlisle. Carlisle then transformed Emmett, since Rosalie was unwilling to do it herself, fearing her blood lust would overwhelm her. After Carlisle changed Emmett, Carlisle and his family moved toHoquiam, Washington where the Quileute Native American tribe offered the Cullens a treaty: the Quileutes would leave them alone if the Cullen family never attacked any humans or trespassed on Quileute land. The Cullens agreed and lived in relative peace until they had to move on. Between the Cullens’ first and second stay in Washington, Alice and Jasper joined his coven as well, having found Carlisle on their own. Throughout the Twilight saga, Carlisle works as a doctor, acting as the coven leader and offering medical advice and help when Bella is pregnant in Breaking Dawn.

Forbes magazine claimed in its 2009 Fictional 15 list of the wealthiest fictional characters that Carlisle is the richest of them all, using 370 years of compound interest and timely investments to amass an estimated fortune of $34.5 billion.

Peter Facinelli plays Carlisle in the Twilight film series.

Esme Cullen

BioEsme Cullen (born Esme Platt and later Esme Evenson) is Carlisle Cullen’s wife and the adoptive mother of Edward, Emmett and Alice Cullen, as well as Rosalie and Jasper Hale. She enjoys restoring old houses and her physical age is 26. She has no special power, but has a strong ability to love passionately. Esme is described as having caramel-colored hair; she also has a heart-shaped face with dimples, and her figure is slender, but rounded and soft. Esme was born in 1895 in Columbus, Ohio, where she was treated at the age of 16 by Carlisle after breaking her leg when climbing a tree. She married Charles Evenson, but he abused her. After finding out she was pregnant, she ran away and gave birth to a son, who subsequently died a few days later. Grief-stricken by his death, Esme attempted to kill herself by jumping off a cliff. Presumed dead, she was brought to a morgue. Carlisle, who remembered treating her years before, was able to hear her faint heartbeat and transformed her into a vampire. Esme fell in love with and married Carlisle soon after. She loves her adoptive children, including Bella, as if they were her own and has the most affection for Edward, but she still grieves that she is unable to bear children.

Esme is present throughout the entire Twilight series, revealing her past to Bella during the Cullens’ baseball game in Twilight. Esme treats Bella as her own daughter, comforting her after several traumatic events. In the film adaptation of Eclipse, Esme participated in a battle against the new-born vampires but in the book series, it is stated by Sam in the Breaking Dawn that she is not a fighter. In Breaking Dawn, it is revealed that Esme owns a South American island named “Isle Esme” that Carlisle purchased for her, and where Edward and Bella spend their honeymoon.

Elizabeth Reaser plays Esme in the Twilight film series.

Alice Cullen

BioAlice Cullen (born Mary Alice Brandon) is the adopted daughter of Carlisle and Esme Cullen, adoptive sister of Edward and Emmett Cullen, as well as Rosalie Hale and the wife of Jasper Hale. Alice is petite and pixie-like, with a graceful gait and hair that is short, spiky, and black. Her special ability is to see the future, an enhanced version of her ability to have premonitions as a human. Her ability is limited; she is only able to see the outcome of a decision once it is made. Due to this, decisions made in the spur of the moment can not be foreseen. Alice can see futures involving humans and vampires, but is unable to see those involving half-breeds, such as Renesmee and the werewolves. In Breaking Dawn, Alice theorizes that she can see vampires very clearly because she is one, can see humans somewhat less clearly because she was one, and cannot see werewolves or half-breeds because she never was one. Alice is bubbly and optimistic, and she loves and cares for Bella like a sister. She is also close to her brother Edward, and enjoys shopping, make-overs, and throwing parties. Alice’s early history is vague, as she remembers nothing about her human life and woke up alone as a vampire. It is eventually revealed that she was born around 1901 in Biloxi, Mississippi, and was committed to an asylum because she had premonitions. Alice was transformed by an old vampire who worked at the asylum to protect her from James, a tracker vampire who was hunting her. After some research, Alice found her grave and discovered that the date on her tombstone matches the date of her admission to the asylum. Through her research she additionally discovered that she had a younger sister named Cynthia, and that Cynthia’s daughter, Alice’s niece, is still alive in Biloxi.

Throughout Twilight, Alice uses her ability to see the future and help Bella when she is in danger. The two soon become friends, loving each other like sisters. In New Moon, Alice foresees Bella jumping off a cliff and assumes she is trying to commit suicide, though Bella actually was cliff diving. After discovering the truth, Bella accompanies Alice to Italy to prevent Edward from killing himself. They are successful, but are taken to see the Volturi, who police the vampire world. Through Alice’s premonitions, Aro is able to see that Bella will eventually become a vampire and invites her, Alice, and Edward to stay with them; it is later mentioned that Aro especially covets Alice’s gift. In Eclipse, Alice, who proves to be an adept fighter, joins the fight to destroy a group of rampaging newborn vampires, created by Victoria in an effort to take revenge on Edward. Alice acts as Bella’s maid of honor at her wedding inBreaking Dawn and helps care for Renesmee until leaving to search out a crossbreed after the Volturi plan to destroy Renesmee, believing her to be an immortal child. Alice is successful and the Volturi, convinced there is no threat, leave.

Ashley Greene plays Alice in the Twilight film series.

Emmett Cullen

BioEmmett Cullen (born Emmett Dale McCarty) is Rosalie Hale’s husband, Carlisle and Esme Cullen’s adopted son, and Edward and Alice Cullen, as well as Jasper Hale’s adoptive brother. Emmett is tall, burly, extremely muscular, and, to most humans, the most intimidating of his adoptive siblings. He has curly dark hair and dimpled cheeks, and despite his physical attributes, he is actually the joker among the Cullens. He is always eager to engage in fights, and is often described as Edward’s favorite brother.

Emmett was 20 and living in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, in 1935 when he was mauled by a bear. The injuries from the attack were severe and he was found by Rosalie, who had been hunting in the area at the time. Rosalie, who was reminded of her friend Vera’s baby by his dark curls, dimples, and innocent appearance, carried him over a hundred miles to Appalachia where Carlisle was, asking him to spare Emmett’s life by turning him into a vampire. Emmett joined Carlisle’s coven but initially had trouble adjusting to the family’s diet of animal blood. InTwilight, Emmett is at first wary of Bella but soon warms up to her, treating her as his younger sister. He often teases her for her clumsiness, criticizes her old truck and constant blushing, and votes in favor of her becoming a vampire in New Moon. In Breaking Dawn Emmett jokingly makes innuendos about Bella’s sex life until he is silenced when she defeats him several times in arm wrestling matches; he later helps train Bella to fight in the oncoming battle with the Volturi.

Kellan Lutz plays Emmett in the Twilight film series.

Rosalie Hale

BioRosalie Hale is the adopted daughter of Carlisle and Esme Cullen, adoptive sister of Jasper Hale as well as Edward and Alice Cullen, and the wife of Emmett Cullen. Her physical age is 18, and she was born in 1915 in Rochester, New York. Rosalie is described as exceptionally beautiful, even for a vampire; she is tall, statuesque, and has long, wavy blonde hair. While she was human, she was said to be a woman with elegance, class, and eyes the color of violets. In Eclipse, she describes her human self as vain, self-centered, and shallow, pleased with her physical beauty and forever desiring attention. A wealthy young man named Royce King II took an interest in her and soon the two became engaged, with Rosalie eager to have a fancy wedding, live in a big, expensive house, and have children of her own. While visiting her friend Vera, she one day noticed that she did not share the same loving relationship with Royce as her friend Vera did with her husband. Dismissing it, Rosalie later walked home and met an intoxicated Royce and his friends, leading to her being beaten, gang-raped, and left to die in the streets. Carlisle, coming across her, pitied her and changed her into a vampire with the secret hope that she would become Edward’s mate, though the two of them are never more than brother and sister. After her transformation, she tortured and killed those who had attacked her, including Royce, but did not drink their blood, a fact that she is proud of. Apart from Carlisle and Edward, she has the most self-control and appreciation for human life, and has never tasted human blood.Rosalie is bitter that her life as a vampire prevents her from having children and experiencing the normal changes of life, and her desire to be human is so strong that she would give up her immortality and beauty for it.

When Rosalie first appears in Twilight she is hostile toward Bella and jealous of her humanity; she is also irritated that Edward could be attracted to Bella, a mere human, when he had never shown the slightest interest in Rosalie, who has always been desired by men. In New Moon, she mistakenly reports to Edward that Bella is dead after supposedly committing suicide. She is guilty and apologetic upon Bella and Edward’s return from Italy, and later opposes Bella’s choice to become a vampire, stating that she wishes there had been someone to say “no” for her. In Eclipse, Rosalie reveals her past to Bella with the hope that Bella will choose to stay human, and she later joins in the fight against Victoria’s army of newborn vampires. In Breaking Dawn, Bella contacts Rosalie after finding out she is pregnant, knowing that Rosalie has always wanted children. She stays by Bella’s side throughout the pregnancy, defending Bella’s choice to keep the baby; this ultimately brings the two of them closer together, and by the end of the novel they have become friends. Rosalie later helps care for the child, Renesmee, while Bella is undergoing transformation into a vampire.

Nikki Reed plays Rosalie in the Twilight film series.

Jasper Hale

BioJasper Hale (born Jasper Whitlock) is the adopted son of Carlisle and Esme Cullen, adoptive brother of Rosalie Hale, as well as Edward and Emmett Cullen, and husband of Alice Cullen. He takes the name Hale to pass as Rosalie’s sibling. He was born in Texas and joined the Confederate States Army in 1861 to serve in the American Civil War. Due to his extremely charismatic personality, he ascended through the ranks quickly. Jasper was turned into a vampire in 1863 by a vampire named Maria when he was 20 years old. After transformation, he gained the ability to sense and manipulates the emotions of those around him. Recognizing his high rank in the army, Maria decided to change him into a vampire to help her claim territory in Monterrey. Jasper’s responsibility was to train young vampires and then kill them when they were no longer useful. After about a century of this, he grew weary of the lifestyle and joined an old friend, Peter, and his mate Charlotte. Jasper left the two eventually, not wanting to feed on humans because he could feel his prey’s emotions as they died. Alice, foreseeing that they would be together, met him in a half-empty diner in Philadelphia, and together they sought out the Cullen family. Due to his past, where he was able to feed on humans whenever he chose, Jasper lacks strong self-control. In Eclipse it is suggested that the “vegetarian” lifestyle is not Jasper’s first choice and that this also affects his self-control. It is also suggested that he remains with the Cullens mainly for Alice’s sake and that while he is fond of them all, he is not as attached to them as she is. He is described as tall with honey blond hair, and is muscular but lean. His face and body are covered with crescent-shaped scars, after his years of fighting and training newborn vampires.

In Twilight, Jasper accompanies Alice and Bella when they are hiding from James, using his ability to calm Bella when she is stressed or afraid. In New Moon, he loses control and attacks Bella when she gets a paper cut, prompting Edward to leave Forks in order to protect Bella. In Eclipse, Jasper teaches the werewolves and vampires fighting techniques to defend themselves against newborn vampires. In Breaking Dawn, he leaves with Alice to find a vampire-human hybrid, and returns with her to defend Renesmee and the rest of the family against the Volturi.

Jackson Rathbone plays Jasper in the Twilight film series.

Renesmee Cullen

BioRenesmee “Nessie” Carlie Cullen is the dhampir daughter of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, born on September 10, three days before Bella’s nineteenth birthday in Breaking Dawn. Her name is derived from the amalgamation of the names of Bella’s mother, Renée, and Edward’s adoptive mother, Esme. Her middle name, Carlie, is a portmanteau of the names Carlisle, Edward’s adoptive father, and Charlie, Bella’s father. She has the same facial features and hair color as Edward, but has her grandfather, Charlie Swan’s, curly hair, and brown eyes like Bella. Her heart pumps blood, giving her a blush, and her pale skin slightly glows in sunlight. Her skin is warm and soft to the touch, but it is as strong as a vampire’s. Only minutes after she is born, she is imprinted upon by Jacob Black, who becomes her soul mate and acts as an older brother figure to her. Renesmee can survive on either blood or human food, though she prefers blood, and she does not produce venom. Her special abilities are transmitting thoughts to others by touching their skin and penetrating mental shields, the opposite abilities of each of her parents. She rapidly grows both mentally and physically, is able to speak only seven days after her birth, and by the end of the novel can read, run, hunt, and perform other tasks at advanced levels for her young age. Her intelligence stuns everyone, and she is able to understand what is happening around her when the Volturi arrive. Jacob nicknames her “Nessie” because he considers her full name to be a mouthful, though Bella strongly dislikes her child being nicknamed “after the Loch Ness Monster.” By the book’s end, however, all of the characters have adopted this shortened version. She will reach physical maturity after about seven years, when her appearance will be around 17, and then stop aging.

Weeks after Renesmee is born, Irina, a vampire from the Denali coven, sees Renesmee and believes she is an “immortal child”, a young human child who had been changed into a vampire. She informs the Volturi, as immortal children are not permitted to exist due to their unpredictable nature. Intent on killing Renesmee and the other Cullens, the Volturi travel to Forks. The Cullens gather witnesses from around the world to testify that they have seen her mature and grow, and so she is therefore not an immortal child. Alice brings another half-breed, 150-year-old Nahuel, who explains that half-breeds pose no danger to the vampires. Convinced that Renesmee is not a threat, the Volturi leave, and Renesmee and her family are left in peace.

Actress Mackenzie Foy is set to play Renesmee in the film adaptation of Breaking Dawn.

James

BioJames was born towards the end of the American Revolution. His father was a French trapper and his mother was from England. She had come to America as an indentured servant and later ran away from her master. James was raised to track and trap by his father at a young age. The Iroquios killed his parents before his eleventh birthday. He used his substantial skills to survive on his own in the wilderness.

As a vampire, James was a skilled tracker who enjoyed the hunt as a sadistic game. He tended to get “feelings”, a sort of “sixth sense”, about his quarry’s whereabouts, which aided him in the hunt. Though it’s never explicitly stated, perhaps this was the ability he brought over from his human life. He never lost his quarry, except in one case (Alice Cullen) where his prey was turned into a vampire before he could attack her. He wanted her because Alice’s scent was very intoxicating to the latter, like Bella’s is to Edward. For revenge, James murdered Alice’s creator, causing Alice to be alone. Unlike the Cullens, he drank human blood regularly as his food source, and because of this, he was physically slightly stronger. While in London, he targeted Victoria, and she avoided him for months until he found her evasion interesting and made her his mate. She became a member of his coven, which was later joined by Laurent.

While in Siberia, he came across the scent of a werewolf and chased it throughout the country.

Victoria

BioVictoria was born in London in the 1550s. She worked as a housemaid with her older sister, Anne, but the owner always mistreated them and they had barely enough to live. When she was 12 years old she ran away with Anne and they eventually found new jobs, though they were still mistreated. One night, her sister disappeared and Victoria had to learn to survive on her own, perfecting her evasion of pursuers. A few years later, her sister returned as a vampire and changed her into one as well, and introduced her to her creator, Hilda, as well as two other vampires, Mary and Heidi. A few years later, they were joined by Noela. Victoria lived a happy life with them, until the Volturi came and claimed that they had drawn too much attention from society and executed Hilda for the crime. Heidi was immediately taken in by the Volturi, under the influence of Chelsea’s power. The other four vampires tried to escape, but only Victoria survived.

While in London, she became the target of the tracker James, and she tried to avoid him for months until he found her evasion interesting and made her his mate. She became a member of his coven, which was later joined by Laurent.

Laurent

BioLaurent was born in the early 1700s in Paris, France, into an aristocratic but financially embarrassed family during the reign of King Louis XIV. He was the third son, and had little in the way of prospects. Laurent was recommended for a minor position in the court of the Sun King by his older brother, who married into a more prosperous family. Laurent loved being a part of the court and had ambitions to rise. He was always attracted to people with power, and curried their favor. He had a knack for discerning who the most important person was in any given grouping, and then attaching himself to that person. There was a certain way about Laurent that made anyone he singled out feel more important. Therefore, he did well among the other aristocrats and had a promising future.

His life changed when a mysterious ambassador named Boris, purportedly from the Romanov court in Russia, made a diplomatic visit to the French court. The ambassador’s strange behavior was attributed to cultural differences. He came out of his quarters only at night, kept a retinue of mute servants and soldiers who were totally obedient, and always put off discussions of matters of state. He did seem to enjoy the entertainments of the French court immensely and was very interested in King Louis’s art collection.

Laurent was drawn to the powerful Boris and befriended him. When the mysterious disappearances of men and women began to attract notice, the ambassador had to move on. Before he did, he offered Laurent the opportunity to go with him, which he accepted out of his thirst for power. Eventually, Boris told him the truth about himself, and Laurent begged him to share his power and immortality, and he complied.

Boris became his companion for awhile, until Laurent grew tired of his creator’s jovial habits and left him to find someone with more power. He ran into one of the surviving Romanians, Vladimir, who still radiated some of the power he had once held. However, he did not stay for long as he next turned to the Volturi, who held the exact kind of power that he sought. However, Aro turned him away after finding out that he had encountered the Romanians and declared him as untrustworthy. He continued to hope that he would get another chance to join the Volturi, though the chance was never offered. He wandered the world, allying with anyone who seemed to have power until he found someone more powerful. Eventually, he joined joined James’s coven. The three of them once tracked down a werewolf across Siberia. They then went to the US, becoming nomads.

Alec

BioAlec was born in England around 800 A.D, son of an Anglo-Saxon woman and a Frankish soldier. He was born a few minutes after his fraternal twin sister, Jane. Both Alec and Jane had strong psychic abilities that were evident even in their human state.

Aro was made aware of Alec and his sister through the thoughts of a visiting nomad. Aro had shown interest in Alec and his twin sister Jane since they were toddlers, but decided to wait until they were old enough to turn them (the Volturi had already instated its rules about immortal children) so left them in the care of their parents. Their talents had not taken a focused shape at that point, but bad things happened to people who were unkind to the twins or their family, and good luck followed those who were friendly to them. Eventually, the superstitious locals found the twins too frightening to endure. They were accused as witches and condemned to be burned at the stake.

Aro was apprised of the situation by a nomad who knew of Aro’s interest in the twins. Aro hurried to the village, arriving just in time to interrupt the execution. Transformed at the age of about 12 or 13, they are the smallest and youngest in appearance, as well as the most prized members of the guard due to their incredibly powerful gifts. It is said that they are the cornerstone of the Volturi’s offensive abilities.

Though not directly said, they could be considered two of the most powerful vampires in the world gift-wise, capable of taking down opponents regardless of size or age.

Jane

BioJane was born in England around 800 A.D, daughter of an Anglo-Saxon woman and a Frankish soldier. She was born a few minutes before her fraternal twin brother, Alec. Both Jane and Alec had strong psychic abilities that were evident even in their human state.

Aro was made aware of Jane and her brother through the thoughts of a visiting nomad. Aro had shown interest in Jane and her twin brother since they were toddlers, but decided to wait until they were old enough to turn them (the Volturi had already instated its rules about immortal children) so left them in the care of their parents. Their talents had not taken a focused shape at that point, but bad things happened to people who were unkind to the twins or their family, and good luck followed those who were friendly to them. Transformed at the age of about 12 or 13. They are the smallest and youngest in appearance, as well as the most prized members of the guard due to their incredibly powerful gifts. It is said that they are the cornerstone of the Volturi’s offensive abilities.

Due to the pain Jane experienced during her burning at the stake and the anger she felt towards the villagers, after her transformation from human to vampire she gained the supernatural talent of inflicting the mental illusion of pain on others (the illusion of burning). Jane has since become one of the prize members of the Volturi Guard. It is unknown whether or not Jane’s human name was ‘Jane’ as well, but the chances are high that it was. Her and Alec’s surname remains unknown.

Marcus

BioMarcus became a vampire at age 19 and acquired the power to read the emotional ties between people. Aro first met him after his own transformation. Together with Caius and Athenodora, they formed the Volturi before meeting Didyme, who was Aro’s biological sister, and fell in love with her. Didyme was blessed with the ability to make people happy. Marcus and Didyme eventually became discontent with the Volturi, and planned on leaving. In order to prevent Marcus from leaving the Volturi, Aro, who pretended to give his blessing, killed Didyme because he was too integral to his plans to lose. Marcus never found out what Aro did to Didyme, and afterwards Aro had Chelsea use her ability to ensure Marcus remained loyal to the Volturi. Aro also intended to use Corin to make him happier, but he refused the comfort.

By 500 AD, the Volturi had usurped control of the vampire world from the Romanian Coven. Aro ruled the Volturi, along with Marcus and Caius, although he generally acted as spokesperson. The Volturi, under the three ancients’ control and leadership, set down the laws of the vampire world and cruelly punished those who did not follow to them. Carlisle Cullen came to live with the Volturi for some time. The Volturi, as well as a majority of the vampire species, did not understand Carlisle’s “vegetarian” lifestyle and tried to convert him to human blood; they failed to do so. After staying with the Volturi for a decade, Carlisle decided to leave for the New World.

Marcus, as well as the rest of the Volturi, are both feared and respected throughout the vampire world as the guardians who keep the human world ignorant of the supernatural. He is also known to be respected in the human world as “Saint Marcus”, the holy priest who drove all the vampires from Volterra. His national holiday, St. Marcus Day on the 19th of March, is celebrated each year by the people of Volterra. The legend most likely developed out the fact that the Volturi do not permit hunting within the walls of Volterra.

Aro

BioAro was born in Greece after 1300 BC. He was transformed into a vampire in his mid-twenties and joined forces with Marcus and Caius.

Approximately a decade after becoming a vampire, Aro changed his sister Didyme, in the hope that she would possess an ability related to his, as well as his future wife, Sulpicia. However, Didyme was blessed with an ability not as useful to him; the power to make people happy. Aro’s colleague Marcus fell in love with her, and she with him. However, Marcus and Didyme eventually became discontent. In order to prevent their leaving the Volturi, Aro killed Didyme: Marcus was too integral to his plans to lose. Aro had Chelsea use her ability to ensure Marcus remained loyal to the Volturi, and Marcus never found out the truth.

By 500 AD, the Volturi had usurped control of the vampire world from the Romanian Coven. Along with Marcus and Caius, Aro ruled the Volturi, although he generally acted as its spokesperson. The Volturi, under the three ancients’ leadership, set down the laws of the vampire world and punished those who did not follow them, as it posed the threat of discovery of Vampire world.

Caius

BioCaius was born around 1300 BC, and at some point became a vampire. He was born at least a century before Aro and was transformed into a vampire in his 40s. He later joined Volturi, along with the two other leaders, Aro and Marcus. He met Athenodora and they began travelling together as a bonded pair, with her later becoming Caius’s wife. He and Athenodora joined Aro, and were quickly joined by Aro’s sister Didyme, and later Aro’s romantic interest, Sulpicia. Aro and Caius were in agreement after Didyme’s death devastated Marcus: the wives must be protected at all cost. Some 2000 years before Breaking Dawn, he was nearly killed in a fight with a werewolf, which prompted him to hunt them to near extinction. He also took part in the extermination of the immortal children. He kept himself occupied with other crusades such as the werewolves, immortal children and the clean-up of the southern wars, making sure the newborn armies and their creators were destroyed.

Riley Biers

BioRiley Biers was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and had lived in the Southwest along the Pacific coast. He reached the end of his freshman year at Oregon University when Victoria saw him. She was afraid that the Cullens would come after her and sought someone strong enough to protect her, and so changed Riley into a vampire on his way home. After his transformation, she told him that she’d fallen in love with him and told him half-true stories that led him to willingly serve her and return her perceived feelings. She taught him the capabilities and limitations of being a vampire, including the Volturi’s threat.

When she decided to create more newborn vampires for protection, Riley was jealous. However, she asked him to choose the members for her, which pleased him as he was led to believe that she didn’t want anyone but him. To make the newborns easier to control, he told them stories about vampires being vulnerable to sunlight and wooden stakes, as was commonly believed by humans. He was also told never to inform the newborns about the Volturi until they were old enough.

When Victoria felt that she was being tracked, she left Riley to care for the newborns and disappeared before he could go with her. During her absence, he befriended the newborn Diego, whom he grew very fond of. Victoria returned a while later and told him they would begin using the newborns as an army rather than as guards, something that she learned about while running in South America.

Newborn production then went into high gear and Riley was constantly busy containing the newborns and selecting potential humans whose disappearances would attract little notice.

Bree Tanner

BioBree was born in Nevada, but lived in Idaho for most of her life. Bree believed that her mother had left her abusive father when Bree was four; in fact, Bree’s father murdered her mother. He buried the body in the desert, then packed up and moved to Idaho with his young daughter. Because of the abuse, Bree felt isolated from her peers. She was a quiet, withdrawn girl. No one ever noticed the signs of her abusive home life, despite some physical evidence. Finally, Bree ran away from home a few weeks before her sixteenth birthday. She had enough money for a bus ride to Seattle, but nothing more than that. She tried unsuccessfully to get a job, and began stealing in order to eat. She slept in parks and alleys-anywhere where she felt a little bit safe. Her biggest fear was that the police would catch her and send her home to her father. She’d been on the run for less than three weeks when Riley found her behind a restaurant, picking through the trash bins.

Zafrina

BioZafrina, Senna and Kachiri were best friends and natives of the Pantanal wetlands as humans. After Kachiri was changed into a vampire, she went back for her friends a few years later and changed them. Ever since then they have been together, hunting only along the fringes of the Pantanal, never interacting with humans unless they are hunting, and never bothering to act human. They first met Carlisle Cullen and his family in the 1940s while they were on a hunting trip, and became friends.

Zafrina appears to be the most outspoken of the Amazon Coven, and generally serves as their spokesperson. As with the other members of her coven, Zafrina is described as being tall with dark hair, a long face and elongated limbs; and with a rough, deep voice that matches her wild appearance. She is often prone to wild movements and is among the least civilized vampires shown in the series.

Senna

BioSenna was changed by Kachiri, along with Zafrina. Ever since then, they have been together, hunting along the fringes of the Pantanal, only interact with humans when hunting. They first met Carlisle Cullen and his family in the 1940′s, and befriended them all. Senna helps witness against the Volturi to assist the Cullens. She never leaves Zafrina’s side during her time in Forks. After the problem was resolved, she returned to the rain forest with her “sisters”. Similarly to her sisters, Zafrina and Kachiri, Senna is dark-skinned and very long-bodied with wild dark hair, and wears nothing but animal skins. She also tends to wear her hair in a braid. As a non-vegetarian, her eyes are generally burgundy.

Peter

BioPeter was originally created during the Southern Wars as part of Maria’s army. Against long odds, he survived his first three years. His job was to care for the newborns, full-time. He was later befriended by Jasper, and fell in love with the newborn Charlotte. Jasper described him as a civilized vampire who didn’t like to fight, even though he was good at it.

One day Jasper was ordered by Maria to kill all the ‘pawns’; newborns past their first year. Jasper requested Peter’s help. Peter tried to persuade Jasper that some had potential, but Jasper disagreed. After a long night of killing, Jasper could see it was taking a toll on Peter. When Jasper called out the next name on the list, Peter was suddenly furious. When Charlotte appeared, Peter changed; his feelings gave him away. He shouted for her to run, bolting after her. Both escaped successfully.

Five years later, Peter returned for Jasper, who had also left. By this time, Peter and Charlotte were now mated. While traveling with Jasper, Peter noticed his depression was always worse after they hunted. Jasper left after a few years traveling with the couple, since he couldn’t handle the overwhelming emotions of his prey. Peter and Charlotte didn’t feel the same way; they only wanted release from fighting. After Jasper settled with the Cullens, Peter and Charlotte visited regularly. In Midnight Sun, Alice sees Peter and Charlotte coming to visit and Edward has issues concerning Bella, mentioning that Peter isn’t known for his self-control.

Demetri

BioDemetri was born in Greece and transformed by the Egyptian Coven’s leader, Amun. They were very close at the time, and worked together to develop his power. When the Volturi heard of Demetri and his powerful gift, he was offered a place in the guard, and he obliged due to Chelsea’s power over emotional bonds. Ever since then, he has been the Volturi’s tracker; whenever anyone tries to elude the Volturi’s grasp, usually out of fear of punishment, Demetri tracks them down. As a tracker, he is significantly more talented than both James and Alistair.

Demetri’s gift is sensory location; he catches the “tenor” of a person’s thoughts or from anyone who had met them in the past, and uses it to follow his targets until he finds them. No matter where his targets escape to, he can find them anywhere. It is believed that he would not be able to track Bella, since she is protected from mental abilities. However, it is still said in New Moon that his powers are far more powerful than James’, because he can track people from all across the world, while James needed to be relatively close to the victim.

He is considered the greatest tracker in the world, and that is why Aro recruited him, because he does not surround himself with second-bests. The Volturi had a tracker before him, but when they heard of his superior tracking power, they replaced the tracker.

Felix

BioBella describes Felix as ” very big, tall, and thick through the shoulders “, and that his size reminds her of Emmett Cullen. He is described as having a slightly olive complexion which looks odd combined with his chalky skin. He also has
short, cropped, black hair, though in the film portrayal, Felix has dark brown hair that is layered. He is not gifted, unlike most of the Volturi. It is assumed that he is kept in the guard because of his immense strength and physicality. He also is thought to be a fighter, because of his eager optimism at the possibility of a fight.

In Breaking Dawn, Bella meets Felix again, describing him as hulking and menacing as an iron-spiked cudgel.

Heidi

BioHeidi was born in the 16th century in Germany. She was changed by a vampire named Hilda and lived with her coven for several years (which was joined by Noela, Mary, Victoria and Anne), before the Volturi accused them for attracting too much attention to themselves. In truth, Aro wanted to acquire Heidi to his “collection”. Right after Hilda was executed, Heidi became bound to the Volturi and betrayed her coven. Aside from herself, Victoria was the only one who lived.

Heidi is described as gorgeous and statuesque with long, lustrous mahogany hair and long legs. Her eyes are violet, due to her using blue contacts over red irises. Her voice is described as silky.

Athenodora

BioAthenodora is the wife of Caius and a member of the Volturi family. She lives in Volterra, Italy and rarely leaves the tower, even during important times of vampire history, such as the hunting of the immortal children. She only appears at the end of the Breaking Dawn, but plays no role in the action. In the book, it is mentioned that during the confrontation between the Volturi and the Cullens, that there appeared to be “two hooded figures, definitely women, flanked by two hulking bodyguards.” These women were Sulpicia and Athenodora, and are often mentioned together. They are important to the ancients, and therefore have to be protected.  It’s unknown when, where or how she met Caius, but in Breaking Dawn, the Romanians mention that she and Sulpicia joined Aro and Caius before their rise of power around 500 A.D.

Athenodora is described as a drifting waifish figure with no special powers. She is fair-haired, and has the powdery skin and filmed eyes of all Volturi leaders.

Charlotte

BioCharlotte was originally created in the south as part of Maria’s newborn vampire army. She was not intended to be left alive. Peter was the first person to talk to her after the transformation, soon becoming the only sane, stable thing in her new life. After her first year of life, a deep bond grew between the pair. One night, Jasper was giving the newborns one-on-one instruction. He would call them up individually, but none returned. Charlotte was the eighth to be called. Jasper selected her and gestured for her to follow. Enraged by this, Peter yelled for her to run and bolted after her. They both escaped, and later became mates. Peter went back for Jasper, who lived with them for awhile before deciding to leave them because of the overwhelming emotions of his prey. Peter and Charlotte stayed on good terms with the Cullens, visiting them several times. Charlotte would have been tempted to join Jasper and Alice had it not been for their strange diet.

Mary

BioMary is an American nomadic vampire, originally born in Nova Scotia around 1890 and transformed soon after her 28th birthday. She made her first appearance in Breaking Dawn, she had helped as a witness for Renesmee against the Volturi in their confrontation against the Cullens.

When Alistair left out of fear of the Volturi, Mary had declared her intent to remain with the Cullens. She also befriends Randall on her way to Forks, although they did not travel together. After the Volturi retreated peacefully, she went on her way.

Randall

BioRandall is an American nomadic vampire who was born in California in 1945 and changed in 1963, at age 18. Carlisle Cullen was one of the first vampires he met, and he has always considered him a close friend.

Randall appears in Breaking Dawn to help witness against the Volturi. Randall is not a vegetarian.

While on his way to Forks, he befriended nomad Mary who was also on her way to the Cullens. When Alistair left, fearing the Volturi, Randall and Mary declare themselves as willing to stay and help no matter the risk. When Jacob speaks on the wolves’ behalf, Randall and Peter refer to them as “children” and “infants”.

Randall leaves the Cullens after the Volturi retreated peacefully.

Eleazar

BioEleazar was originally from Spain, and as such is fluent in Spanish.

Eleazar was once a member of the Volturi guard. A gentle person by nature, he wasn’t entirely happy with their methods, but he felt he was serving the greater good by working with those who would uphold the law. Eleazar met Carmen sometime later and instantly became her mate. Because Carmen had no interest in joining the Volturi, and was troubled by the violence of Eleazar’s everyday life, Eleazar asked Aro’s permission to leave. Aro didn’t like the idea but gave his blessing nonetheless. Eleazar and Carmen traveled for awhile, looking for a more compassionate lifestyle. They stumbled across the Denali Coven, and were awed by their ‘vegetarianism’. Tanya asked for Eleazar and Carmen to try out the lifestyle, and after they did for quite awhile they joined the Denali Coven permanently.

Carmen

BioCarmen and her mate Eleazar came from Spain. Eventually, they found the Denali Coven and decided they liked their style of life better. They have been mated ever since. Edward described her as a very compassionate soul and explained that if Carmen and Eleazar had not found Tanya’s family they would have eventually found some other way to forgo human blood. In this respect, Carmen’s and Eleazar’s canon greatly resemble Alice’s and Jasper’s canon, since both couples had a sense of conscience before they joined their respective families.

Carmen and Eleazar “are both well suited to the ‘vegetarian’ lifestyle.”

Tanya

BioTanya was originally from Slovakia, though by 2006 her accent had all but disappeared. Edward Cullen playfully referred to Tanya as a succubus, to which she replied that she was one of the original ones. Tanya’s adopted mother, Sasha, was also a vampire and was killed thousands of years ago by the Volturi for creating an immortal child. Tanya and her adoptive sisters, Irina and Kate, were not punished because Aro was able to verify that they did not know about Vasilii, the immortal child. This event left the Denali sisters traumatized, and as a result they were purists for vampire laws.

Unlike their friend Carlisle Cullen, Tanya and her sisters have not always been vegetarian. They once used their vampire allures to seduce human men before draining them of their blood. However, their consciences eventually caught up with them and forced them to adhere to a “vegetarian” diet. After that, they moved to Denali, Alaska, where they changed their diet to animal blood, and later Carmen and Eleazar joined them.

Irina

BioIrina was a vampire, one of the original Denali “sisters” and an originator of the myth of the succubus. She was a “vegetarian” and led a very peaceful lifestyle. She and Laurent had a relationship before he was killed by the shape-shifters in New Moon. Irina was killed by Caius after giving false information to the Volturi about Renesmee Cullen. Irina, Tanya, and Kate were orphaned by the Volturi because their mother, Sasha, the vampire who had transformed each of them, was harboring an immortal child named Vasilii; a human child that was turned and therefore couldn’t learn to control himself due to his primitive mind.

The sisters were responsible for the myth of the succubus, as they would have sexual relationships with human men before killing them. The Denali sisters later lived a vegetarian lifestyle, and became close friends of Carlisle Cullen.

Kate

BioKatrina, commonly known as Kate, is a vegetarian vampire and one of the “original” Denali sisters. She has a strong relationship with her coven, as well as with the Olympic Coven, and the Denalis consider themselves to be the Cullens’s extended family or “cousins”. Kate is strong-minded and has the talent of creating a mental electric current on her skin which shocks anyone who comes into contact with her.

She and Garrett become mates in Book 3 of Breaking Dawn, just before the confrontation with the Volturi. He is willing to sacrifice his more “traditional” vampire lifestyle and become a vegetarian.

Garrett

BioGarrett was born in the mid-1700s during the American Revolutionary War, in New England. He was transformed around 1780, during a battle. Garrett was a hotheaded patriot who willingly fought for the colonies’ right to self-govern. He was a true believer in the American dream. Because local vampires took advantage of the war’s massive death toll to feast frequently, Garrett was transformed by accident in the aftermath of the battle. Garrett was with an isolated group of ten soldiers when a vampire attacked them, knocking him unconscious at the beginning of the attack. The vampire, after draining the other nine soldiers, was sated enough and he didn’t drink much of Garrett’s blood. Thinking that Garrett was dead, the vampire ran after giving a blow to Garret’s head. Three days later, he was a fully-fledged vampire. He never thought of creating another vampire beside himself. Garrett is always curious and willing to investigate a mystery, and after his transformation he strove to understand what had happened to him.

Tia
BioTia came from a very large family with many children. Her mother was overwhelmed and financially distraught, and so started placing her children into the care of her second cousin (Benjamin’s great uncle) when she could not feed them. Tia was 5 years old when she was given up.

She had a good singing voice and nimble fingers, so her uncle kept her with him. When she was 7 she met Benjamin, and although he was 3 years older than her, they became close friends. Tia was turned into a vampire at the age of 17 by Benjamin, and she became his mate.

Amun

BioAmun is an Egyptian vampire and the leader of the Egyptian Coven and the only survivor from the Volturi’s assault during the war. Described as having dark hair and olive pallor, Amun is mistrustful, paranoid and outspoken. He has an extremely quiet mate named Kebi. He created Demetri and worked to build his tracker powers, making him the best tracker in the world causing Aro to send Chelsea and take Demetri from him. Later Amun created Benjamin. He is very possessive of Benjamin because of his elemental powers, and has made sure Benjamin was hidden from Aro, because Amun knew Aro would want him for his “collection” because it happened before. Amun is also easily intimidated.
